Is that our new front door?

   We had so many projects we THOUGHT we were going to get finished this past weekend.  The Florida weather took that option away from us though.  We did manage to get our door put in, but still have some trim work to do and a gutter to put up in the near future.  We had some water damage on the other door area and our 3 little babies were being escape artists.  Back in 2009 we were unfortunate to have an house fire in which the house was a total loss.  We were fortunate though that it happened during the day and nobody was hurt and we had insurance to rebuild.  In the rebuilding process one of kids looked at us and asked "Is that our new front door?"  Its actually the back door but we always used it as our entry way.  We got a kick out of it though.

We were hoping to repair our "new arrivals" home but were unable to get to it because of all the rain we've been having lately.  This is our next project because we have some new babies I'm so excited about.  Make sure to check back within the next couple days and be ready for all the cuteness.

propagating jasmine

 As it normally goes this little area seemed to progress as the day went  on.  It started out with cleaning off the front porch and almost tossing out the barn birdhouse.  When I thought "no, I'll find a place to hang it".  Then I remembered the shepherd hook my hubby just brought home. The table was sitting there already, it just needed a cute little potted plant.  Then I remembered the rocks from another area I was in the process of cleaning and thought "how cute".  At this point another idea popped into my head.

 I should plant some Jasmine and let it grow up the tree.  My mom has a huge old oak tree in her backyard covered with Jasmine. When its in full bloom it has the most amazing scent.  I've used this method on ivy before and it seems to be growing well.  So I did a some research on jasmine and thought I'd give it a try.

  





Cut off your sections to measure 6 inches just below a leaf.

 Then take off the bottom leaf or leaves.

 Dissolve a aspirin in 1 cup of water.

Put your cuttings in the water for 3 to 4 hours, 

 then they are ready to plant.    If you have tried this  method with jasmine leave me a comment, I'd love to hear how it went.

Therias the duck

   Meet Therias, the newest addition to our family.  My hubby found him coming home one evening.  He walks in the door "honey I got something for you".  Okay, so I"m following him out to the van not thinking anything about it because this man is ALWAYS bringing something home.  And this is how it went.  Me-"what did you get?"  The hubby- "I found you a duck"   Me-"no you did'nt." He opened the van door and I see no duck!  Then he comes out from under the seat.  Me- "There he is, there he is!"  and that's how Therias the duck got his name.                   

 He seems to really like the turkeys, almost like he thinks he is one.

   He's enjoying his new pool, I cant wait to do some project with it.

rustic produce hanging baskets

 I seen so many versions of this, I decided to give it a try.  I found some scrap wood, these are from a couple 1 x 3's I had laying around.  I cut 10 boards at 15 inches, sanded to get any roughness off from the cuts, and a couple coats of paint. I used 2 old privacy fence boards for the back to hold the smaller boards together (any thin boards will do).  Then just add  two screws for each board.

I think the hardest part of this project was finding the right size baskets.  I ended up with a set of baskets that I couldn't use, but I'm sure I'll eventually find another project for them.  So if ordering online pay close attention to the dimensions.  I still need to attach mine to the wall, but this is such a great project especially if you have a small kitchen like me.  I would love to hear any of your suggestions, so feel free to leave a comment.

upcycled coffee can

So let me just say, I drink a LOT of coffee.  So for all the coffee drinkers out there, here's a few ideas on how to reuse all those saved coffee cans.  My husband and son are always tinkering around with a truck or 4 wheeler or something.  They just throw their small parts in a coffee can, put the lid on, and they are safe until they get it put back together.  I seen what I think is a genius hack where you stack your already pre-measured coffee filter and coffee into the can.  I use them for feeding the chickens, they're perfect with the handle on the side. So here's a little project I did for storing my compost scraps until I can get out to the tumbler.

So I just punched a hole in the lid with a nail for the knob.  I used a nut and bolt to attach the knob to the lid.  It's really not necessary, but I just wanted to give it more of a canister look.

            I used a foam brush (I found it easiest to kind of dab) to paint a section of the can white.
                              I found some stick on stencils at wal-mart to do the lettering.   

Then lastly I just used a sharpee to fill in the lettering.  And there you have it a temporary solution for storing your compost scraps that looks a little prettier then just an old coffee can sitting on your counter.

Vertical planters

I made this a while ago, sometime in 2014, and thought I'd share.  I love it, it definitely is unique.   I have had one of the pots break from some teenage horseplay but they easily are taken apart to replace if this happens. I found instructions from The horticult they have step by step illustrations if you need a little more help. 

Here's a diagram of how your going to put it all together.

From top to bottom these are some of the parts you are going to need: eye screw for wood,s hook,threaded eye bolt,coupling nut,threaded rod for length desired ( you will need a angle grinder or hack saw for cutting).

You will also need these for each pot.  It is called a test plug, you can find these in the plumbing isle. I picked mine up at lowes. you need to take them apart, you will only use the plastic parts.

You put one on the bottom and one on the top of each pot with a nut to hold your pots in place (I used 6 inch pots that I picked up at lowes). You also need to drill holes in each plug for water drainage( you'll need a drill and bit).

A long time coming

     I'm sure this has happened to everyone at some point.  We ripped our carpet out of our living and bedrooms around four years ago.  Yes, I know that's horrible, but it just seemed every time we had some extra money something always came up.  Well guess what, I finally got my flooring!!!!!  So I just wanted to share some pictures and a few tips I found along the way.

We paid just shy of $18 a box for 23.91 sq ft,  and if anyone has priced flooring that is a steal.  

 Right now I'm in the process of putting all the trim on, can you say time consuming.  I can't wait until this is done and it's time for paint, paint, and more paint.

  After some research I found these little doodads.  If your anything like me and my husband the whole cutting angles for trim doesn't work out to well.  Not to mention my husband absolutely detests anything home improvement.  Check out the picture above, you use these on/in the corners so you don't have to deal with the dreaded angles.  We picked these up at Lowe's, $1.18 per piece or $1.06 per piece if you buy 24 or more.  It was well worth it to me.
